Course Content

Preparing an inkwell

Make your own ink pots using a traditional Ottoman technique with silk and soot ink.

Dot practice

Train your hand to write with a broad-nibbed reed pen and an inkwell.

Rabbi Yassir demo

Take the first step to mastery - imitation. The teacher will demonstrate how to write the famous ‘Rabbi Yassir’ composition with instruction on fundamental components of a good composition including dot proportions, pen angles, spacing and contours.

Rabbi Yassir practice

Learn by doing. Apply your observations from the teacher demo to practice the composition yourself with the your new pen and inkwell, including guided help from the teacher.

Through it you develop patience, focus and an artistic eye for detail.

Ahar paper sizing

Students will learn how to size fine art paper with wheat starch and egg to make their own traditional ahar paper.

Practice & individual feedback

Grasp the bread and butter of your calligraphy journey - repetition and feedback. Refine your hand through regular practice on the same composition and individual feedback from the teacher.

Traditionally a student would present a single composition 40 times to his teacher, before the teacher moves him onto the next lesson. But don’t worry, you won’t be kept that long!

Demo - Rabbi Yassir

Observe a second class demonstration to measure your own progress. See how much more acutely you can now recognise the subtleties of a fine composition.

Individual pen cutting demonstrations

Observe how to cut a reed pen yourself using a knife and ‘muqta’ (cutting plate). Even have a go yourself if you’re brave enough!

Demo - Individual Letters of the Arabic alphabet

The teacher demonstrate how to write some of the individual letters of the alphabet (or 'abjadiyyah') for students to begin practising, according to the principles of the Thuluth script.

Practice & individual feedback

As above.

Brief historical presentation

Gain a brief insight into the development of the pedagogy of Islamic calligraphy from the time of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), through to Iraq and the rest of the Islamic world. This includes a focus on the Ottoman calligraphic tradition, seen by many as the tradition that perfected the art.

Tracing demonstration & practice

Learn transfer techniques to plan a design for a final piece.

Tracing onto decorated papers

Transfer your design onto beautiful decorated papers for a final piece, learning how to make traditional carbon paper.

Practice & individual feedback

As above.

Tracing onto decorated papers with light box and Ahar paper

Prepare another final piece on traditional egg-coated ‘ahar’ paper with another transfer technique using a light box.

Meet your teacher

Rizwan Ahmed Khan (b. 1991) is a classically trained calligraphic artist who has been practising the scribal crafts since 2015. In 2018 he decided to leave a promising career as a software professional to migrate to Istanbul and train in the Ottoman tradition of Islamic calligraphy.

He has trained in Western and Islamic calligraphy under various masters, most notably Gaynor Goffe, Soraya Syed, Ivo Grantins and Efdaluddin Kılıç. In 2022 he was awarded the prestigious icazetname (calligrapher’s licence) by his Islamic calligraphy masters at the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), Istanbul.

Rizwan currently resides in London, practising and teaching as an artist. Both the Western and Islamic calligraphy traditions are central to Rizwan’s art, having long felt the necessity as a Muslim growing up in Britain to explore avenues that open the doors of cultural, spiritual and intellectual appreciation between the West and the Islamic world.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help answer any queries you may have about our classes

In short, no! You just need to enjoy it. With calligraphy it’s important to enjoy the journey, not the end product per se. Did you know that one of the greatest Islamic calligrapher’s in history, Asad Yesari, was known to be so crippled he had to be carried around in a basket? And in the Western calligraphy world, there was J. C. Ryan ‘the Handless Penman’ - he had no hands (google him!). They certainly weren’t ‘good at art’, they just had an eagerness to keep at it.

Don't worry, for practical purposes we avoid writing verses of the Quran; so you will not need to be in a state of Wudu to participate in the course.

It certainly can; in fact your own teacher did this during his training years. Whilst Islamic calligraphy is much slower than Arabic handwriting, there are many transferable skills. This can even help you to read different styles of Quranic scripts.

Most of us have busy lives so students get to work at their own pace. The teacher's individual feedback during the lesson is fundamental for development, however the vast majority of the students' progress depends on the practice they can maintain outside of the class, just like any other art.

Whilst it is not advisable to miss lessons, one or two is unlikely to impede your development if you can keep up some manageable and regular practice at home.

So is your teacher and many other calligraphers! So the proof is in the pudding. And right handers need not worry either; your teacher has taught both right and left handers.

Nothing particular for the first lesson. Do remember to bring the pen and ink pot we provide you to each lesson afterwards though.
